Health and Social Care Division

The Health and Social Care Division works with issues concerning health and medical care, social care (including elderly care and services for the disabled), public health and gender equality.

The division safeguards the interests of municipalities, county councils and regions regarding community care services in a number of ways. It represents SALAR in government inquiries and prepares comments on reports and proposals submitted for consultation

The division also represents the members of SALAR in negotiations with the Government, national authorities and other players. Another important task is to give support and provide services to the members of SALAR

The division consists of three sections working with:

  • care and social services
  • health and medical care
  • public health and gender equality

Care and Social Services Section

The section deals with issues such as primary care, social services and dental care.

Another key area of responsibility is elderly care and care of the disabled, including issues regarding assistive technology and devices. The section also deals with issues regarding psychiatric care and efforts to prevent psychiatric ill-health, vulnerable children and young people, as well as alcohol policy and the care and rehabilitation of alcoholics and drug addicts.

Health and Medical Care Section

The section’s work on health and medical care covers a number of areas, including highly specialized medical care, medical care for foreign citizens, clinical research and the provision of pharmaceutical products and new medical technology.

An important task is the work on strategies and methods for systematic improvement of health care. Main issues are improved access to health care services, development of national healthcare quality registries, and publishing of transparent, comparative data on the quality and outcome of health services. The section is also responsible for SALAR’s work on patient safety.

Public Health and Gender Equality Section

The section has a comprehensive responsibility at SALAR for public health and gender equality issues. Gender equality is, together with the diversity and EU perspectives, one of three perspectives that should permeate all SALAR's activities

Among other things, the section works with equality mainstreaming, men's violence towards women, reduced absence due to illness, children's and young people's health, physical activity on prescription, elderly people's living conditions, and HIV/STI issues
